However, I was prepared to perhaps change my mind, and as I first began reading, I will admit I was smiling at how bad things were for him, and thinking well he deserved it all. But, the more I read, the more I realised that maybe there was so much more to Rob than I had previously thought.
Rob has struck a chord with me, he is not the arrogant, despicable person I once believed him to be - I think all this may have been a front for him, but he was been using this for so long he has no idea how to get rid of it. I will also say that Rob was not as he seemed in the book with his brother Alex. The Rob I am seeing now is a very insecure person, really lonely, and angry at himself and the world in general, but he is caught in a vicious circle that he has no idea how to escape from. Now enter Vic, and boy is Rob confused with what he feels when he sees Vic!
Although they first met in Secrets (was great to see Eli and Jarod again), it didn't end well when Rob saw a demonstration in progress., and basically insulted Vic as he tried to get back out. For some reason, when Vic left Secrets, he was looking out for the sub who had insulted him, but he didn't understand why. When he finds him,, he acts totally out of character and takes him home with him, but only to keep him safe.
Once back home Rob's life seems to continue on a downward spiral, but the one thing that he thinks of constantly is Vic, and Rob is drawn to him, and uses more of his savings to try and see him again. All though this book, you can really get to feel the emotions that are running through Rob, and at times he more or less acts like a scared little boy - but this could well not be far from the truth, as you uncover more of his family life at home. - you can't help but really want to reach in and hug Rob - which is not something I thought I would say.
Although I did get frustrated with Rob, as sometimes he seemed like he was trying to ruin things, you also see how much he was craving the attention of Vic, even if it was to punish him. For Vic, he was drawn to Rob, and to begin with he could see something within Rob, but would he be able to rid Rob of the protective shell he had, and show everyone the Rob that was hidden deep inside, and more importantly than that, show Rob the man one that he could be.
