Nearing the end of a suspended jail sentence should unlock a brighter future for CJ Davis, only the chip on his shoulder is as hard to shift as his bad reputation. Born into a family of career criminals who live down Davis Road, an address the cops have dubbed Davis Row, his name alone is like a rap sheet that makes optimism impossible.
Brand-new parole officer Noah Huxley is determined to see the good in men like CJ. After all, he knows firsthand that bad things can happen to good people. His colleagues mock his doe-eyed optimism, but Noah soon sees CJ’s bad attitude and bravado are weapons he uses to keep people at a distance.
Both men know one simple mistake can change a life forever. At first glance, they might seem to be polar opposites. Yet underneath, they're not that different at all.
We meet Noah, who is just starting his first job as a Probation Officer. He is super excited, and none of this seems to wear off when he arrives in the new office. He is taking over from another Probation Officer, and he finds that he intends to do things very different to his predecessor.
One of the first people that Noah has to go and meet in their home, for a probation vist is CJ. Now CJ does not like Probation Officers at all, and Noah is no exception. He has a huge chip on his shoulder, but he is also someone who keeps himself to himself, almost like he doesn't want anyone to see him.
Noah is on a mission, and that is to help CJ whether he wants it or not. Noah also finds CJ very easy on the eyes, and this attraction he does hide to begin with. However, the more Noah tries to help CJ, the more there seems to be something between them, but to be honest neither of them know what to make of the attraction, and anyway they cannot act on it.
The more time they spend together, the closer they become and a lot of CJ's secrets come out, including some that he is ashamed of, but Noah has a way of calming CJ, of making sure he feels valued.
But, as is the way, life has the way of throwing a curve ball, but in this case it is more than one, and I have to be honest and say that it wasn't what I was expecting to happen, and N.R.Walker did this to me on at least three occasions - hence why I could not stop reading.
This is a book that I really enjoyed reading, the plot twists had me wondering what else could happen, and then I was also willing both Noah and CJ to keep together, not let things happen to their budding relationship, but I must confess to also getting angry at Noah at one stage!! He did redeem himself though. A book that I will be reading again.
She is many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words. She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things... but likes it even more when they fall in love.
She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.
She’s been writing ever since...
