Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam's pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the king's wizard, Morgan of Shadows.
When Sam's 14, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds.
At 15, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle - Knight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed.
Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can't control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the king sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan's boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have.
Or, so he thinks.
No, you want more...... this is the first audio book I have listened to that has been this long, and to be honest I was slightly apprehensive about starting it. However, I needn't have worried, as I totally LOVED it.
Word of warning, be careful if you listen while driving (as I was at one time, and luckily was stationary at the time, so didn't matter I was in fits of laughter...).
This is the first book by TJ Klune I have read/listened to, and the writing style is so different to what I normally read, but I have to say it was such a refreshing change, and I will be looking for more books or audio to read/listen to.
I fell in love with Sam, Gary and Tiggy straight away, and the narrator Michael Lesley, has excelled in this audio with all the different voices, but how he managed to keep them the same all the way through I have no idea, I bow to his excellence in this.
When you first meet Sam, he is Sam Haversford, born in the slums of the City Of Lockes, until the day he somehow manages to turn some teenagers into stone, but has no idea how he did so. He is then taken, with his parents, to the Kings Castle, where he becomes apprentice to the Kings Wizard - Morgan Of Shadows.
A little while later, Sam goes into the dark woods running an errand for Morgan Of Shadows, and somehow gets himself into trouble again, and eventually returns to the castle, but not alone. With him is Gary, who is a gay hornless unicorn, and also Tiggy, who is a half giant. With his new friends, came a change of name for him, he then became Sam Of Wilds.
Without even trying to, Sam Of Wilds manages to always get himself into tight spots, and these are so funny. As things are happening, you just know what is going to happen but still laugh as it does. Then to top the lot, he sees a new knight at the castle, enter Sir Ryan Foxheart and Sam is in lust......
Sam adores from afar, and dreams of being with Ryan until he realises he is actually dating Prince Justin. Sam is supposed to be Prince Justin's wizard when he becomes King, and hopes that things between Ryan and Justin come to end, but this is not to happen when it is announced that Ryan has made an oath to marry Justin.
Sam is devastated, and knows there is nothing he can do. He then tries to avoid Ryan at all costs, but sometimes this is just not possible. Then enter the scene..... Kevin the Dragon. Oh I did love Kevin, he grabs Prince Justin and takes him away.
Now comes what I found to be the part of the story where I was laughing more than ever. There is a rescue party arranged to get Prince Justin back from Kevin. The rescue party comprised of Sam, Gary, Tiggy and Ryan. How these four were meant to rescue Prince Justin I'm not sure, but their journey to try and find Justin was just hilarious. You then are meeting dark wizards again (Sam always has problems with them), the Fairy King, who claims he and Sam were almost married, and lots more characters, too many to mention.
There is a HEA to this book, but it took some time for this to happen, but when it did.... oh it was so worth the wait.
This audio book or even the book will not be to everyone's taste, but even though the audio was so long, I truly loved it. I also found that I could listen to just a little bit one day and then even leave for a couple of days before listening again, but know exactly what was happening. This will have you laughing out loud all through, and you will keep listening just to see what else happens!
I really can't express how well Michael Lesley brought the book to life in this audio, and I will be looking for more audiobooks he has narrated, as he is honestly the best one I have heard since I started listening to audio.
He lives with a neurotic cat in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. It’s hot there, but he doesn’t mind. He dreams about one day standing at Stonehenge, just so he can say he did.
