Keith Kramer might be based 1,500 miles away from Gil, but their shared work brings them together—a chance meeting that’s life-changing. Gil is drawn to Keith’s good looks and intelligence, but it’s his innate understanding that Gil is more than the scars on his skin that is truly attractive. He’s everything Gil used to be and more. It blows Gil’s mind that his attraction might be returned.
Only doubt could widen the distance between them. Keith’s hopefulness, borne out of surviving some tough challenges of his own, isn’t enough to bridge the distance alone. Gil will need to believe he has as much to offer as Keith if they’re to build a life together.
I have to say first off, that this book is so full of emotion, you will laugh and cry at different times throughout the book and it will seem you are on a roller coaster ride with all the emotions within the book.
Gils life suddenly changed one day when he helped a mother in her custody battle, and the childs father took exception to this and planted a bomb at Gils house. The resulting explosion had catastrophic effect on Gil, one that he could see no way out of.
To try and recover, Gil took a job as a proof reader for a large company, and was sent to another branch 1500 miles away for a week. It is here that he meets Keith, and although he is attracted to Keith, he is convinced that due to his injuries nobody could ever want him in their life permanently. He looks at Keith and sees "normal", but little does he know that Keith has a secret too.
It seems to be a case of love at first sight with them, and they spend as much time as possible with each other until Gil has to return back home. They keep in contact with other, both sensing that what they have is something special, and it is not long before Gil decides he needs to be with Keith.
They both have their individual struggles, and Keiths secret is revealed, and then events seem to overtake them, and you wonder if their love for each other is enough to see them through.
To me this book showed the relationship as they are in real life and not all sweetness and light of other books. You read how they enjoyed their highs, but also how they coped with the lows that life threw at them. I have to admit I didn't know a lot about PTSD, but now have more of an understanding of how it can change someones lfe, and how seemingly small things can be a trigger.
It is also a book that shows that give and take is required to make a relationship work, and it was like while reading, we were watching them both bloom under the love they felt for each other.
Posy is married to a man who makes sure she doesn’t forget to eat or sleep; her daughter, a budding author and dedicated Whovian, helps her come up with character names. When Posy’s not writing, she enjoys crafting, hiking, and singing spontaneously about the mundane, just to make normal seem more interesting.
