Synopsis
After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommateâespecially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike's flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike's arrival would spark from Zack's teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can't refuse. Pike Reynolds knows there won't be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He's an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he's had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can't risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as builtâand, okay, yeah, as adorableâas Zack. Living with Pike crumbles Zack's restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bedâ¦in the showerâ¦in the hallway⦠He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn't know how to be the man Pike deserves. Book One of the Out of Uniform series This book is approximately 73,000 words One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you're looking for with an HEA/HFN. It's a promise! Find out more at CarinaPress.com/RomancePromiseNow Pike, I truly adore this character. Yes he is out and proud of it, refuses to hide who he is, but he would never out anyone. Pike does have a thing about men in uniform, and Zack is no exception. However, at previous meetings, Zack has made it clear to Pike that he wants nothing to do with him, even to the extent of Zack saying he was straight - but Pike has already seen straight through this, his words "Zack is the gayest straight man I have seen".
Zack has arranged to meet some friends, and is totally dismayed to find that Pike was waiting at the bar for him, with the news it was just them!! This part of the book, you cannot help but smile, as Pike is behaving, but Zack is feeling quite out of sorts. Things then take a hilarious turn when Zack tries and fails to out drink Pike. This is when you really see Pikes character, as he could have quite easily taken advantage of Zack, but he didn't, he took care of him instead.
A few months later, and Zack and Pike meet again, this time at a birthday party for Ryan (Zacks friend), but Zack seems determined to avoid Pike at all costs - mind you, Pike doesn't really want to see Zack either! However, life has ways of throwing curve balls, and such is the case now - Pike has a new job, and it is in the same place as where Zack lives..... and somehow Zack agrees to Pike moving into the fixer upper he now occupies - in the spare room.
Things actually seem to start working for them, the more time they spend together, although Zack is still terrified about anyone finding out that he and Pike are actually together. You can't help but really feel for Pike, as he is doing everything Zack wants, and it seems that he is going to be the one left heartbroken. However, when something major happens in Zacks life, it gives him time to reflect on his life, but more importantly how unfair he has been to Pike - but can Zack finally admit to himself and others he is gay? Has he actually left it too late to have a life with Pike?
I really did love this book, and look forward to reading more in this series.
