You can’t help but fall in love with Kellus as soon as you start reading. Now Arik was totally different and to be honest I really wasn’t sure I would like him. To me, he came across as very arrogant and used to having things done his way when he wanted it done, and if I am really honest I didn’t like him!!
Kellus is alone, and most of the time I think this is how he wants things to be, I think deep down he blames himself for what has happened in his life. Arik looked at Kellus once, and was totally captivated with him. This was a strange feeling for him, as usually he just had boy toys (who he called his BT’s), but this was something else.
Arik began to pursue Kellus, but must to his disappointment he was given the runaround. This was something new for him, someone who stood up to him and wasn’t falling at his feet! I had to smile then, as this was an alien feeling for Arik. He just didn’t know what to do to win Kellus around. What he did know though, was that Kellus was someone special, and needed to be treated with respect, care and also with kid gloves.
It was so much fun to read Arik not having everything his own way, but I think this made Kellus mean so much more to him. Kellus fought him all the time, and would come up with reasons that Arik should leave him alone, and find someone more suitable.
Just as things begin to start looking up for their relationship, bad news is given to Kellus, and it seems like all the progress that Arik has made with him could all come tumbling down. However, Arik knows he has someone special, and is determined not to let Kellus push him away. However, there are still a couple of incidents that occur that then give Arik doubt that Kellus does love him as much as he loves Kellus.
By the end of the book, I had changed my mind about Arik. Don’t get me wrong, he was still arrogant at times, but when Kellus challenged him, it made him pause and think about things, so this was good for him. I think they were actually made for each other, as Kellus would stand his ground on things that were important to him. I could see what Arik was trying to do, he was trying to protect his someone special.
