Forrester is gay, but all he has heard all his life from his family is homophobic comments and slurs, so he keeps himself firmly in the closet when at home. He moves to Gilead, and opens his own book store, and here he meets Kyle, and he is attracted to him as soon as he sees him.... but what can he do??
Kyle has managed to get his life how he wants it, fulfilling his dreams and doing them all while being deaf, including being more or less bullied, by both hearing and other deaf people. When he visits the book store, he sees Forrester, and he really likes what he sees.
The two meet, and seem to begin a relationship, but the big elephant in the room, is that Kyle is out but for obvious reasons, Forrester is not. They still spend time together, and Forrester is honest about why he is not out, and Kyle understands, but no way does he want to be kept hidden, that is not who he is.
Everything changes when there are big problems within Forresters family, especially with his mother falling ill, and now he is torn - between admitting to his family that he is gay and is with Kyle, or does he keep quiet and hope things can continue as they are??
The way that this story is written, you will feel both sorry for Forrester, but also for Kyle. Both are suffering with Forrester keeping quiet, but at the same time you can understand why he feels he can't admit to his family that he is gay. Another important part of the story, was realising that everyone who is different can be someone who is treated badly by others.
